Drawing workshop – Cubism

My first drawing workshop at uni was an exercise in converting a 2D image into a 3D piece. We were to study a human skull and make drawings from it using geometric

Imageshapes. Here are the 3 drawings I produced.

We then had to recreate one of these drawings into a 3D form using cardboard. Here is what I produced.

My aim was to make a hanging mobile as my drawing didn’t quite have a solid head – I only drew the skull’s features floating in space. I wanted the features to hang and spin freely so that they would only occasionally move into place to make a skull. I very much liked the primal look of my work, it reminded me of the paintings by artists Jean Michel Basquiat, whose work is a great inspiration to me.

Furthering my interest in mixing unorthodox materials with paint, I made this piece using the same materials as my previous painting except I added moisturizer to the mix. I enjoy mixing paint and glue together as it creates a translucent effect and the glue preserves layers of colour. Therefore, I scratched into the surface just before it was finished drying so that the under-layers of colour would show through. I was really happy with the way it still looked wet once it had dried, I believe this was because of the moisturizer.
