Spiderman Painting – Pop culture figures in art

My work so far is mainly consisting of memories and disturbing imagery; one could say my work is a representation of how memory warps and distorts.

This painting was one I came up with over the summer, it is based on a dream my boyfriend had. I had originally intended to stick to dreams but quite frankly got tired of it and wanted to paint my memories instead, however it was this painting that has bridged the gap from my past work to my current work. I am interested in synchronicity, a theory by Jung which explains the relevance of seeing random things in our life repeatedly, things that have apparently no relevance to us but keep showing up. For me, Spiderman is one of those things.

I’m also very attracted to fair ground art as it brings out so many variations of pop culture imagery but in a somewhat eerie and disturbing way. This is due to a combination of characters layering over each other in unnatural ways and they are often staring directly at you or off in crazy directions. They are also more often than not out of proportion which only adds to the weirdness.

Here is a photo of the ghost train in Porthcawl, I photographed it myself but for some reason left out the most important part; the hands. From where I saw it, it looked like the hands were meant to be Dracula’s (Christopher Lee’s Dracula – another pop culture figure) but if that were so it would be incorrect, the fingers are facing the wrong way for them to be coming from his body. Even if that wasn’t the intention, I still like the idea of something that is so big which required so much effort to make was wrong in the first place, and people went with it anyway and probably rarely notice. I like this as an idea I can pass on into my own work.

My latest painting is this: a memory I have of spiderman trying to shake my hand at the circus and me recoiling away in terror.

I’m really happy with how it turned out and I intend to make many more, I began sewing to force myself to loosen up but so far I think these paintings are definitely the way to go.
