I have chosen to focus on Migration within the City project as I would like to focus on the movement and production of people and places. I have mainly been studying buildings and their blocky, geometric shapes. I began by taking photographs in which I tried to capture industrial imagery.
I am particularly proud of these images and I find it interesting how they are predominantly made up of masculine colours (blue and grey). Below is my favorite photo of the shoot as it represents the layers within urban areas, creating this feeling of endlessness and being closed-in.
This photograph has been a muse for much of my City project as I am proud of the composition I captured; the variety of shapes, colours and angles sit together very harmoniously. Below was the first drawing I made from it, overall a rather representative drawing.
And from this image I moved onto a more abstract/surrealist style in which I simplified the shapes and converted the colours.
My aim here was to take the composition from my photograph and recreate it in a dreamlike style. I used acrylic paint on brown paper – I chose to work on the brown paper as I thought the gritty texture and the rusty-brown colour would make a good backdrop for my paintings wherever I decide to leave empty spaces.
